Abstract

The burqini is a full-body swimsuit with an attached hood, originally created for Muslim lifeguards in Australia in 2006 by Lebanese-born fashion designer, Aheda Zanetti.?Widely copied by other designers around the world, the burqini has been simultaneously embraced and reviled.?Although generally accepted in Australia and by mainstream Muslims, reactions in Europe (in the era of the so-called “burqa ban”) have been much more hostile—a departure from standard swimming attire that calls to mind difficult questions concerning immigration, gender, and the limits of political correctness.?As a design solution for women who want to swim while staying covered—a style of dress that disappeared from Western fashion in the mid-1900s—the burqini represents a new and fascinating case study in the aesthetics and global politics of Islamic dress.?
