Abstract

More wild salmon should be spawning in rivers draining to Norway's most important salmon fjord this year, thanks to the purchase of fishing rights from commercial fisheries by Elevene rundt Trondheimsfjorden (ErT), a coalition of landowners, sports anglers, businesses, and seven towns in central Norway. The project is the first of its kind in the country. Members of the group have donated a total of 4 million Norwegian kroner (US$615 000) to be paid to 75 commercial net fisherman on September 1, the season's end. Three-quarters of the fjord's 100 commercial fisheries have voluntarily signed up for the 5year experiment. What we really want is for salmon that would have been caught by Trondheim's net fishermen to swim up rivers and spawn.
