The growing use of social media by political parties has reshaped the landscape of political communication and campaign strategies in the digital democracy era. This study maps the evolution of scholarly literature on the utilization of social media by political parties from 2015 to 2025. Using bibliometric analysis through VOSviewer and data from the Scopus database, 97 peer-reviewed articles were examined to identify publication trends, dominant keywords, thematic structures, and patterns of author and country collaboration. The results reveal a significant increase in publications after 2019, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, reflecting a global shift toward digital campaigning. Key themes include social media, political communication, elections, disinformation, and populism, indicating growing scholarly attention to digital political transformation. The United Kingdom, Germany, and Spain emerged as the most productive contributors to this research field. However, the study is limited by its exclusive reliance on Scopus-indexed English-language publications, potentially overlooking non-English or regional studies, particularly from developing democracies. Future research should incorporate comparative datasets, mixed-method analyses, and deeper explorations of emerging platforms such as TikTok or Telegram to capture the evolving dynamics of algorithmic politics and audience engagement in digital democracy. Keywords: Social Media; Political Communication; Digital Campaigns; Disinformation; Political Parties;

Political communication is placed as the study of political science because the messages conveyed in the communication process are politically characterized. In political communication, a strategy is needed to support the success of political communication. This study aims to determine and describe the use of Facebook social media as a political communication strategy in shaping the political image of the PPU PAN DPRD Candidate. The problems in this research were analyzed using a qualitative research approach with the data and information used, obtained from observations and in-depth interviews. Based on the analysis conducted, it can be seen that the communication strategy applied by PAN involves a direct and responsive approach to community needs, especially in the context of visits to sick residents' homes. This strategy includes two main elements. PAN uses a personal and empathetic approach to build emotional bonds with the community, and at the same time strengthen the party's image as an entity that cares about social issues, especially public health. Then for the use of Facebook social media, PAN PPU is still not optimal. However, awareness of the importance of social media already exists so that in the future the use of social media will be more optimized.

Exploring the Dynamics of Digital and Social Media Marketing by Political Parties: Organic Posts vs. Paid Advertising on Meta Platforms
  • Dec 4, 2025
  • Journal of Political Marketing
  • Vagia Mochla + 2 more

This study provides a comprehensive analysis of how political parties in Greece utilized both organic posts and Meta paid ads during the 2023 elections. While previous research has explored various aspects of digital campaigning, few studies have systematically employed the Meta Ad Library to document and assess the content and timing strategies of political parties. This research fills this gap by examining the digital communication strategies of parties during the pre-election period. The findings reveal how political parties strategically leveraged both organic reach on platforms like Facebook and Instagram and paid advertising on Meta to engage voters. A significant finding is that posts targeting specific issues are more likely to be sponsored, whereas posts with ambiguous issue orientations tend to be organic. Additionally, posts focusing on health, infrastructure, and transportation issues are disproportionately represented in paid ads compared to organic posts. These insights contribute to the broader field of political marketing by emphasizing the role of data-driven strategies in digital campaigns. The study offers valuable implications for optimizing digital campaign strategies tailored to platform affordances and voter priorities. Directions for future research are discussed as well.

The development of digital technology has transformed political communication patterns in Indonesia and positioned youth as key actors within the virtual public sphere. In the context of politics and human resource management (HRM), young people represent strategic human resources who play a crucial role in safeguarding collective interests through active participation in political processes. However, in reality, many young individuals tend to distance themselves from politics due to widespread misconduct and poor political practices in Indonesia. This stands in contrast to the political perspectives of Aristotle and Prof. Miriam Budiarjo, who view politics as an effort to achieve the common good through the formulation and attainment of collective goals. This study employs a literature review method to analyze the role of youth in fostering digital democracy through political communication practices on social media. The review also discusses how political parties, political education, and digital literacy can enhance political awareness and participation among young people. The findings indicate that youth hold a critical role in building a strong democratic system, whether through public issue discussions, digital campaigns, or policy advocacy. However, their engagement on social media has not been fully effective due to challenges such as misinformation, polarization, and low levels of political literacy. These findings highlight the importance of strengthening political education and digital literacy for young people strategy to build a healthy, inclusive, and sustainable digital democracy, while ensuring their active participation in shaping the nation’s future.

  • Dave Akbarshah Fikarno

This research is based on the finding of KPK data, during 2004 - 2020 there were 257 corruption cases involving political elites and party leaders as well as regional heads, as well as 297 corruption cases involving private parties. The involvement of the private sector as perpetrators of corruption is due to their interests related to licensing. From this data, a common thread can be drawn, it turns out that many leaders are transactional among political parties and this needs to be reformed to become transformational leaders. The purpose of this research is to want to see problems and problems theoretically, then describe the problems that arise in a description so that later a qualitative conclusion is drawn. The research that he conducted found that there is a strong impression that political parties in the country are still led by transactional leaders rather than transformational ones. Political parties have not succeeded in carrying out their political functions and roles optimally, both related to political education, political communication, political recruitment, political aggregation and articulation, to party involvement in resolving conflicts in society. digital democracy, social media, conversational media, to face-to-face deliberation, have been replaced by smart phone devices that remove barriers, as well as distance between citizens, this makes moving faster and more efficient, low-cost, and able to reach a wide area. The rise of primordial and primordial issues based on ethnicity, religion, race, and inter-group (SARA), in the context of digital democracy must be anticipated and treated as a natural thing.

Political communication is a crucial matter for political actors and institutions to gauge public sentiment, shape public opinion, and influence the current political landscape; it acts as a bridge between the public and political actors/institutions. Throughout history, politics has continuously evolved based on its target audience and the changing world. Particularly in Turkey, the dynamics of political communication for Generation Z, characterized as a new generation of voters with distinct expectations, goals, and political perspectives, have taken on a different dimension compared to various social groups. Political actors and institutions strive to reach the new generation of voters, engage with their interests, and develop effective communication strategies to gain the support of this voter group that is considered the future of the country. This paper explores a different perspective on political communication, emphasizing transparency and equal opportunities, integrating digital and interactive communication into every issue, and examines how such communication strategies were employed by the İYİ Party in digital platforms. The research was conducted between January and June 2023, incorporating recent elections and campaign data. This study is significant in understanding political communication strategies, observing how these dynamics take shape through technological innovations and the targeted audience, and assessing the impact of this communication style on active political participation. The focus on the İYİ Party, which received 9.96% of the votes in its initial elections, demonstrates its distinct political communication strategy compared to other parties, further highlighting the study's importance. The objective of this research is to showcase the transformation of political communication with new-generation voters in the era of social media and digitalization, using the İYİ Party as a case study. The research employs a qualitative approach in two phases. In the first phase, a literature review collected data on the impact of political communication on voters. In the second phase, the social media accounts of the İYİ Party were analyzed to determine their focal topics and strategies through their posts. Additionally, voter reactions were observed based on the identical posts. This process examined how political communication evolved through trends and posts to connect with new-generation voters on social media. In conclusion, İYİ Party’s political communication strategy focuses more on topics relevant to new-generation voters, such as equal opportunities, diversity, education and technology accessibility, welfare policies, democracy, social justice, and rights. These topics are approached with a digital interaction-centric perspective, making political interaction more interactive. * This study is based on the master's thesis titled "Political Parties and Voter Behavior Dynamics in Turkey: The Case of the İYİ Party," conducted at the Department of Sociology at Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University.
