Abstract

This paper proposes a novel beam-steerable Reflectarray Antenna (RA) at Ku-band. This RA consists of a 58×30 square patch elements printed on a flexible plastic substrate. The RA is rolled around two cylinders to form a 30×30 RA aperture. Mechanical rotation is used to turn the two cylindrical tubes in both the left and right directions to steer the beam. The phase synthesis optimization procedure is also introduced. The obtained primary results using array theory show that the beam is able to steer from -24° to +24° in elevation with a steering step of 4° and provide a 4 dB directivity variation by mechanically rotating the RA. These results show that our proposed design is suitable for implementing high gain antennas with beam-steering capabilities that require less power. Such antennas are needed in CubeSat and space applications.
