Abstract

CME Educational Objectives 1. Recognize the signs and symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults. 2. Learn to apply current and developing diagnostic criteria to definitively diagnose ADHD and potential comorbid conditions in adults. 3. Understand the usefulness of cognitive-behavioral therapy as part of a comprehensive treatment plan for ADHD in adults. A 26-year-old, single, college-educated, white male sought treatment for self-described symptoms of attention-deficit/hyper-activity disorder. He had been minimally employed since completing college and was unemployed for the past 2 years. Due to this unemployment, he had accrued a large credit card debt and was unable to pay child support for his daughter. He reported receiving some mental health treatment during college in the context of feeling overwhelmed by his coursework and experiencing difficulty completing projects for his classes, but he denied any prior diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
