Abstract

Welcome to the 20th anniversary of the creation of Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (JANAC). We are kicking off this anniversary volume with the commemorative logo that you see on the cover and an opportunity to hear from the people who made everything possible. I am pleased to have guest editorials from our two editors emeriti, Jeanne Kalinoski, the founding editor and editor from 1989 until 1996, and Richard Sowell, editor from 1996 until 2007. Their editorials shed light on the history of the journal, how it is intertwined with ANAC, and the dedication needed to start, maintain, and improve a scientific journal. I was not a member of ANAC in the early days—I did not join until 1993—so I did not witness the exciting and difficult early days as the association formed, took hold, and grew. Given that, I was fascinated by Kalinoski’s description of how JANAC was launched. It reminded me of a quote from the American poet Ralph Waldo Emerson (n.d.) who said, ‘‘Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.’’ Kalinoski and the other founding members did indeed leave a trail for us, and no part of the trail is more visible than JANAC.
