Abstract
The use of relatively inexpensive, high strength to weight ratio fiber reinforced polymer composite (FRPC) as a load bearing pipe repair sleeve is an emerging technology that is becoming common for offshore applications. This chapter will first outline the conventional offshore riser repair techniques and their limitations which, in turn, provide the motivation for the adoption of composite repair. Results and discussion on finite element (FE) analysis of the composite repair system subjected to typical load cases sustained by an operating riser are presented. The effects of varying design parameters in the composite repair system are highlighted. The chapter concludes with the positive viability of using FE simulation to model the composite repair system as well as the future trends.
