Abstract

Introduction: As the population of persons older than 65 years continues to expand, it becomes ever apparent that understanding how we age has great medical significance. We know that as people age, their skin undergoes a number of changes including atrophy, alterations in pigmentation, wrinkling and increased susceptibility to tumor growth. Cumulatively, these changes lead to poor wound healing. As trauma is the 5th leading cause of death in this age group, it will become necessary to develop mechanisms to improve wound healing in the elderly.
