Abstract

Tramadol is used orally for chronic pain in the USA, but no IV form is available. Prior data suggests it has utility in controlling headaches. We utilized an IV sterile preparation (IND has been applied for), to treat refractory headaches, including migraines, in the outpatient headache/pain clinic. Tramadol, 50mg per ml, was given IV in the clinic to patients with intractable migraines and other headaches. 42 patients were treated with IV tramadol (total of 56 refractory migraine/headache attacks treated), after placement of an IV line and with pulse oximetry monitoring.
