Abstract

The link between DTs, traditions, genres or text types, and historical linguistics is a theoretical and methodological starting point that is becoming increasingly established in historical linguistics, especially in Romance and Hispanic linguistics. This chapter reviews the relations between text types and the syntactic organization of discourse that have been proposed for the history of Spanish, particularly with regard to the elements that connect parts of speech (supra- or extra-sentential connection) and the configuration of inter-sentential relations (parataxis vs. hypotaxis, and specific forms of each), while also taking into account syntactic changes at the intra-sentential level.
