Abstract

Family homelessness is a crisis in the United States. Youth growing up in families that are experiencing homelessness are at significant risk of depression, substance use, school problems, foster care involvement, and later homelessness. Families that are homeless face significant stressors, which includes parental depression and substance use, stressors within families, and structural stressors—such as finding permanent housing in the community. Child and adolescent psychiatrists and mental health providers can play an integral role addressing the needs of families that are experiencing homelessness.
