Abstract

This chapter discusses the methods of simplifying NMR spectra. The focus is on NMR shift reagents and the double resonance technique to show how the spectra are simplified by the application of these methods. The overlapping signals can be separated and the spectrum can be changed to the first-order spectra upon treatment with the shift reagents. This is demonstrated with an example. The development of the high-resolution NMR spectrometer has reduced the application of the shift reagents. The underlying principle of double resonance in the simplification of NMR spectra is explained with experiments. The technique of double resonance can be extended by the use of two audio oscillators to accomplish the irradiation of two different protons simultaneously. If the reader is interested in measuring the size of coupling constants in a multiplet or complex lines, then double resonance experiments are recommended.
