Abstract
This chapter discusses various multi-antenna techniques. Multi-antenna techniques are a set of techniques with the common themethat they rely on the use ofmultiple antennas at the receiver and/or the transmitter, in combination with more or less advanced signal processing. Multi-antenna techniques can be used to achieve improved system performance. They lead to improved system capacity and improved coverage, as well as improved service provisioning.The chapter also provides an overview of different multi-antenna techniques applicable to the 3G evolution. The chapter illustrates how multi-antenna techniques are specifically applied to High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA), and its evolution and to Long-Term Evolution (LTE) is discussed. The chapter provides the details of multi-antenna configurations and discusses the benefits of multi-antenna techniques. An important characteristic of any multi-antenna configuration is the distance between the different antenna elements. Furthermore, spatial multiplexing is described. It allows for more efficient utilization of high signal-to-noise/interference ratios and significantly higher data rates over the radio interface.
