Abstract

Summary5′-Nucleotidase activity of muscle in various muscle diseases was determined and the results were correlated with the histological abnormalities. Among various muscle diseases, Duchenne muscular dystrophy at an early stage showed significantly increased enzyme activity. Increased activity was, however, observed in severely abnormal muscles from patients with other major forms of muscular dystrophies, polymyositis and also certain neurogenic diseases. The increase in the activity of 5′-nucleotidase in diseased muscle appears to be related to the pathological evidence of fibrosis in it.
