Abstract

mineralocorticoid receptor (MA) gene expression. Chronic environmental enrichment which induces GR gene expression in various subregions in hip• pocampus. also induces the expression of the transcription factor NGFI-A which may bind to the GR gene promoter and thus Induce GR expres• sion. We used male Sprague-Dawley rats. treated for 21 days with various types of antidepressant drugs. Then, by using In situ hybridization with specific ~S-UTP-Iabelled cRNA probes, we examined GR mRNA and NGFI-A mRNA expression In rat hippocampus. The results reveal a highly significant Increase of NGFI-A mRNA expression In hippocampal subregions CA1, CA3 and CA4 8S well as in cortex In rats treated with amitriptyline when compared to saline. GA mANA expression In the same regions show a similar pattem. These results suggest that NGFI-A gene expression may be a crucial link between the serotonin and glucocorticoid systems in the hippocampus.
