Abstract

Introduction and aim of the study: A short cervix diagnosed in the second trimester of pregnancy and abnormal vaginal biocenosis are the most important risk factors of preterm labor. Progesterone and cervical pessaries are used for treatment and prevention of preterm delivery. However, there are concerns, that pessary placement may impose a negative effect on the vaginal microbiota, leading to the development of pathogenic flora. The aim of the study was to assess whether progesterone treatment and the use of a pessary affect vaginal biocenosis in pregnant women with a short cervix.
