Abstract
The commonest cause of death from advanced colorectal cancer is disease progression of hepatic metastases. Down-sizing metastases with systemic chemotherapy to make them amenable to resection can improve overall survival for patients. Radio-embolisation (RE) is a technique for administering resin or glass microspheres that contain yttrium-90 to unresectable primary or secondary hepatic malignancies internally via the liver's arterial supply in a single procedure. Since the radioactive microspheres are implanted in or immediately adjacent to the malignancies, RE is a form of brachytherapy.
