Abstract

To determine whether non-draining, untreated soft tissue infections presenting to the emergency department (ED) are associated with increased localized heat as determined by an infrared thermography (IRT) camera. Localized heat production is a cardinal feature of inflammation broadly and infection specifically. At present, the determination of localized heat is a clinical, bedside maneuver, and emergency providers may know how to quantify this sign. IRT technology is capable of quantifying heat in the infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum and encoding this data in the pixels of a digital image.
