Abstract
Early-onset neurodevelopmental disorders are more commonly diagnosed in boys than girls. It has been postulated that prenatal stress disproportionately affects male vs female fetuses. Epigenetic factors likely are at play throughout life as well, and ongoing stress can have an impact. As such, family functioning and existing comorbidities can have a significant effect on a child with neurodevelopmental disorders. This presentation aims to address the importance of assessing the family by recognizing the central role family plays in promoting health and wellness.
