Abstract

The present study has been made to assess the bacteriological and the physiochemical quality of bottled and bubble top can packaged drinking water (PDW) sold in Kolkata and surrounding areas and compared that with that of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) supply water. The supply water is then compared with average quality of bottled water of some branded companies of advanced countries with respect to Indian and international standards (WHO, IBWA, US FDA, and EPA) and calculated water quality index (WQI). The study showed that all brands of PDW or KMC supply were of excellent category (WQI<50) and free from coliform bacteria thereby rendering it safe for human consumption. It was also found that 41% (bottled) and 90% (bubble-top-can) samples had pH below 6.5, which cannot be relaxed as per Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) requirement whereas KMC supply water is well within the acceptable limit. Thus it can be concluded that KMC supply water can be a good alternative for drinking purpose other than the PDW available in the local market.
