Abstract

Biomimetics is an innovative design concept that draws inspiration from nature and its elements and processes to solve complex human problems. Adapting nature’s patterns and designs has resulted in influencing the design of items that are as common as Velcro to as complex as an airplane. This chapter introduces the concept of biomimetics, discusses medical device design and the recent trends in design and manufacturing, and illustrates how biomimetics plays a role in influencing medical device design through two case studies. The chapter also addresses how biomimetics can synergize with the current innovations in design and manufacturing as well as the potential challenges in doing so to address surgeon and patient needs.
