Abstract

Being an independent high-technology crime investigative consultant is not for everyone. One must have not only the education and experience in the high-technology crime investigative profession to be successful, but also the required personality, self-discipline, and confidence. The bottom line is that it's not really better being an independent consultant, just different. The real change is in lifestyle and sources of stress. Some high-technology crime investigators and managers working for corporations believe they can succeed, but have not conducted sufficient objective analyses to validate their beliefs. Prior to beginning a career change from a corporate high-technology crime investigator and/or manager to an independent high-technology crime investigative consultant, one should develop a detailed business plan and supporting project plan. In doing so, one may find that being a consultant is not something he can do. This chapter describes how to determine if being a high-technology crime investigative consultant is right for one, provides a high-technology crime investigative consultant's business plan outline, and discusses running an international high-technology crime investigative consulting business.
