Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) for Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome after trauma is controversial. Most lung injury after trauma resolves with conventional ventilation. Venovenous ECMO is utilized for refractory respiratory failure in non-surgical patients; its use in trauma patients is controversial due to concerns of catastrophic bleeding, the presence of intracranial pathology, acute coagulopathy and the potential for multiple surgical interventions.
