Abstract
The 21Ne NMR spectrum of 21Ne-enriched neon gas dissolved in the anisotropic phase of the thermotropic liquid crystal ZLI1167 was recorded at various temperatures. The curve obtained by plotting the absolute value of the quadrupole coupling constant, |χ|, as a function of temperature is found to possess a maximum in the nematic range. This is considered as an indication of at least two contributions to the total electric field gradient at the nucleus. After the transition to the smectic A phase, |χ| starts to increase without detectable discontinuity to low temperature. The results are compared to the corresponding ones measured earlier for 83Kr and 131Xe.
