Abstract

Though local anesthetics are the safest and most effective drugs for the prevention and management of pain, research continues to seek new and ‘improved’ drugs and techniques in an effort to make pain control safer, more comfortable and more effective. In this chapter we discuss five relatively recent additions to dentistry’s pain control armamentarium: computercontrolled local anesthetic delivery (C-CLAD); articaine hydrochloride; the local anesthesia reversal agent – phentolamine mesylate; the local anesthetic ‘on switch’ – buffered local anesthetic solutions; and a nasal mist for anesthesia of maxillary non-molar teeth – tetracaine with oxymetazoline.
