Abstract

1H MAS n.m.r., 27Al MAS n.m.r., and spectroscopy in the near-infrared (n.i.r.) have been performed to study the Plank mechanism in Al-exchanged zeolite ZSM-5. It is shown that the dissociation of water on exchanged aluminum cations in ZSM-5 occurs even at room temperature. The aluminum-exchange prevents partially dealumination of the framework. The bridging OH groups and the nonframework AlOH groups removed by activation at 673 K arise by an additional loading with water; thus, the Plank mechanism is reversible.
