Abstract

This chapter describes the development and importance of parks in a city. Nearly all persons enjoy parks, and yet most cities are deficient in park area as well as park accessibility. The excuse for this is attributed to three causes: lack of funds to buy land, high cost of maintenance, and widespread ownership of automobiles. The lack of funds to purchase land that might be converted to park use is a matter of taxation. The per capita tax is not great. As for the implication that the automobile takes people into the countryside where they can enjoy the wide open spaces and greenery, certain factors are overlooked. Parks provide opportunity for a bit of unplanned relaxation that might be derived just from sitting on a bench surrounded by greenery, or by strolling along pathways that wind among trees and flower beds, or by playing on tennis courts or enjoying other games. Children are enticed by playground facilities.
