Abstract

Choseon was in remarkable transition in the 19th and 20th centuries. During these times of the flowering period, Choseon was forced to open the door by signing a trade treaty with several Western countries. Western missionaries began to enter Choseon in the 19th century and spread the gospel in various methods, bringing enlightenment to Choseon. However, the Western missionaries faced considerable difficulties because Choseon was rigidly exclusive to the new Western religion. In this regard, the Western Protestant medical missionaries effectively opened the door of mission in the 19th and 20th centuries by establishing hospitals to cure and care the poor and sick. This resulted in the formation of Protestant Christianity in Choseon. That is to say, the Western medical mission became the starting point of the formation of the Choseon Protestant Church and became the mother of the faith community. In addition, it significantly impacted on the transformation of Choseon with the Gospel.
