Abstract

This chapter describes the assessment measures that are commonly used to assess for eating disorder symptoms and associated features in children and adolescents. Psychological assessment of eating-disordered behaviors in children and adolescents can lead to early detection of a potentially life-threatening problem. The most commonly used semi-structured interview for diagnosis of eating disorders in children is the Eating Disorder Examination adapted for Children (ChEDE), a child version of the Eating Disorder Examination interview for adults. Several assessment devices are available for eating disorders in children and adolescents. Many, however, are adaptations of measures developed for adults. Few have been developed from inception specifically to assess eating disorders in children and adolescents. Those assessments that have been developed for children and adolescents are relatively new; thus, these assessment approaches have not had extensive evaluation of their psychometric soundness. In developing assessment strategies for children and adolescent eating disorders, it will likely be useful to develop different measures for childhood onset (before the age of 14) versus adolescent onset due to the significant cognitive, emotional, and developmental differences of these two age groups.
