Abstract

This chapter is an extensive consideration of implant options of lumbar interbody fusion. Over the past several years interbody fusion has evolved a great deal. A variety of novel surgical approaches (e.g. oblique lateral interbody fusion, lateral lumbar interbody fusion, parasacaral approach to lumbar interbody fusion) have been developed and introduced to the spine surgical community. Along with this introduction has been an influx of various interbody fusion cages, many of which have unique designs and materials. This chapter explains the differences in interbody cage design, materials, and fusion substrates in the context of the variety of different approaches for lumbar interbody fusion. This chapter also will examine the available literature on these important topics with the intent to provide surgeons the necessary updates to make important, evidence – based decision for their patients.
