Abstract

This chapter concerns the development of microcapsules and microparticles for the incorporation of corrosion indicators and inhibitors into a multifunctional smart coating for the autonomous indication and control of corrosion. The incorporation of these microcapsules/microparticles into a corrosion protective coating will result in a smart coating that has the inherent ability to detect the chemical changes associated with the onset of corrosion and respond autonomously to indicate it and control it. The microcapsules/microparticles were specifically designed for corrosion control applications. Their design has, in addition to the usual advantages of other microencapsulation technologies, the corrosion controlled release function that triggers the delivery of corrosion indicators or inhibitors on demand, at the onset of corrosion. This chapter summarizes the development, optimization and testing of pH-sensitive microcapsules and microparticles, specifically designed for early detection and indication of corrosion and to deliver corrosion inhibitors on demand when incorporated into a coating.
