Abstract

The ability of bacteroids, isolated fromLupinus luteus L. nodules at the stage of active nitrogen fixation, to assimilate (1-14C)-glucose and (2-14C)-glucose was being studied. The label is incorporated into all the Krebs cycle metabolites, amino acids and sugars after 5 min of glucose insertion into cell suspension. High activity of glucose phosphorylation was found in bacteroidsin vitro, the reaction rate being the highest at a glucose concentration of over 100 mM. In lupine nodules sugars can be essential carbon substrate delivered to the bacteroids from host-plant cells. This point of view is discussed.
