Abstract

The non-heart beating donor (NHBD) is an increasing source of organs for transplantation. Cardiac donation from NHBD has been considered unsuitable due to concerns over irreversible myocardial damage resulting from warm ischemia. We describe successful cardiac resuscitation in a NHBD with extracorporeal perfusion. Furthermore, we review this donor source to estimate what proportion would be suitable for cardiac donation.
