Abstract

The chapter reviews the application of smart coatings for obtaining active comfort in clothing. Comfort in wear is assessed from the aspect of the active role of adapting to changes in physiological needs in accordance with the activity of the wearer and changes in the environment. Currently available systems for regulating adaptive comfort, which involve applying phase change materials, shape memory polymers, and stimuli-responsive polymers, are briefly discussed. The most important functions of responsive performance apparel are assessed from the point of view of thermal insulation and vapour transmission temperature sensitivity of coated materials.
