Abstract

This chapter presents an analysis on the World Trade Organization (WTO) as a great opportunity to fail or succeed in Chinese retailing. It highlights the impact of China's accession to the WTO on Chinese retailing and Chinese retail policies to meet the challenge of accession to the WTO. Although China's accession to the WTO will bring a deep impact on Chinese retailing, the impacts vary greatly in different regions and in different retail formats, which provide Chinese retailers with opportunities to grow up and become competitive in some regions and some retail formats. Meanwhile, there is the three years' transitional period for Chinese retailers. Chinese retailers can take full advantage of this three-year period to prepare and develop some advantages in some regions. Therefore, it is possible for Chinese retailers to be able to compete with MNRs and obtain advantages in the competition. The chapter also reviews the fast change in Chinese retailing. A significant and typical characteristic of Chinese retailing is its fast changes due to the Chinese transitional economy.
