Abstract

Various in vivo and in vitro studies and recent reports from our lab have shown the anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effect of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPAR-γ) in a number of experimental acute pain and inflammation models. However, the role of PPAR-γ activation on diabetic neuropathic pain is not known. Further, its effect on oxidative stress and proinflammatory cytokines related to the maintenance of hypersensitivity is not yet studied. Thus, the present study was designed to investigate the effect of pioglitazone (PIO), a PPAR-γ agonist, on hyperalgesia and allodynia in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.
