Abstract

The fetal and neonatal periods mark a time when erythrocyte indices and characteristics differ remarkably from indices of children and adults. This chapter reviews the stages of production of erythrocytes and erythropoietic factors. This chapter also reviews both physiologic and pathologic alterations in erythrocyte physiology of the term and preterm neonate. A detailed understanding of erythrocyte physiology and the nutritional and growth factor needs of preterm and term infants will aid the clinician in caring for neonates in the first weeks of life.
