Abstract

This chapter summarizes the attempts to utilize wastepaper sludge ash (WSA) and allied products in construction, in particular in concrete. The construction industry has been regarded by many as very conservative in its approaches, especially in terms of uptake of advances in various technologies. One of the more conservative approaches has been seen as being in the uptake of advances in material development. The genesis of this conservative approach has been seen to be partly due to frustrations associated with government legislative frameworks, which have tended to overly rely on the more tested materials. This chapter showcases the character, properties, and technologically successful waste paper–based construction materials and products. Full-scale application in construction is generally still thin on the ground, and the chapter is therefore biased towards research into the subject, and a significant list of references has been provided in this regard. Notwithstanding, the chapter endeavors to highlight cases of full-scale applications in the construction industry where known or witnessed.
