Abstract

Transient and steady-state optical transmission changes have been observed in single crystals of tellurium. The changes are induced by a Q-switched CO 2 laser and monitored by a cw 18 μm He-Ne laser. Two of the phenomena are explained on the basis of refractive index changes within the Fabry-Pérot resonator formed by the Te crystal faces. A third effect is thought to be an increase in optical absorption. Parametric amplification as reported by Patel has not been observed.
