Abstract
The amplification characteristics of 1.58 /spl mu/m band Er/sup 3+/-doped fibre amplifiers pumped in the 0.98 and 1.48 /spl mu/m bands were investigated. The noise characteristics were improved by adopting 0.98 /spl mu/m band pumping. There was >0.3 dB improvement in both the average noise figure and the flatness of the noise figure.
