0059 Health Education Yorkshire And The Humber (heyh) Surgical Simulation Collaborative

Abstract

Background For the past two years HEYH have run a successful, quality assured simulation programme, including non-technical skills, for core surgical trainees and general surgery St3 trainees.1 The latter will include ST4–6 trainees this year. ST3-ST6. Similarly, trauma and orthopaedics, paediatric surgery and ophthalmology are developing similar programmes. A number of issues must be addressed for successful implementation: out-of-hours access to skills centres, selection of suitable simulation models, faculty training, cost. Aim To develop a consortium of simulation fellows and programme directors that will assess existing resources, creates new simulation training opportunities and proposes a strategy for surgical simulation in the region. Results Simulation fellows from various surgical specialties have founded the Collaborative. To date we have identified problems with out-of-hours access to simulation centres, identified differing attitudes to the uptake of training between specialties and held a workshop to promote regional collaboration. We also plan to explore greater use of cadaveric dissection in simulation following the availability of Thiel-preserved bodies. Finally, we have gained representation at the Clinical Skills Network and Clinical Skills executive committee meetings. The collaborative hopes to promote a Surgical Consortium for Creating an Evolving Simulation Strategy (SuCCESS). This will require the support of HEYH which has the executive power to promote and implement change and the active involvement of the surgical training programme directors. Conclusion The SuCCESS initiative will aim to co-ordinate and enhance efforts for integration of simulation into surgical training. It will act as a source of support to surgical simulation projects and will be enriched by future simulation fellows employed in the region.
