Abstract

The power generation performance of polymer electrolyte fuel cells(PEFCs) is significantly influenced by the mass transfer in the cathode. Liquid water flooding occurs if water formed as a result of electrochemical reaction is not removed adequately from the flow channel and deteriorates the cell performance. In this study, U-shaped corrugated flow channel structure using metallic mesh has been suggested for the flow channel on bipolar plate that can effectively transfer mass from the rib part. The effect of mesh number of the metallic mesh flow channel on the mass transfer performance in the cathode is investigated. It is found that the case of metallic mesh flow channel with low mesh number shows a higher mass transfer performance at high current density region compared with the case of serpentine flow channel.
