  • O Ilchenko

The problem of forming professional motivation of future teachers in the measurement of the development of the new Ukrainian school is considered. The techniques “Motivation of teaching students of pedagogical university” (S. O. Pakulina, S. M. Ketko) and “ Studying the motives of students’ educational activity (modification of A. O. Rean, V. O. Yakuninin)” were applied. The Poltava V. G. Korolenko National Pedagogical University became the base of empirical research. According to the conducted surveys results, the leading motives of teaching future teachers were analized, the nature of the dominance of motives (external / internal) in their professional motivation was clarified. It is shown that the main motives for students’ studying at the moment of investigation were the internal ones, which are part of the structure of professional motivation and are its driving force. In the course of the research the conditions necessary for the formation of stable motives of students’ professional motivation (procedural-substantive, didactic-educational, psychological) were formulated. The results of the study confirm that the effectiveness and success of the formation of students’ professional motivation depends directly on the level of motives, among which the internal, professionally oriented motives (high cognitive interest) should dominate the external, narrow-personal motives (low cognitive interest). In order to ensure such a result, a purposeful, systematic work based on partnership and subject-subject interaction of the pedagogical process participants should be organized in the higher education institution. We see the prospects of further scientific research in the identification and characterization of the factors of positive and negative influence on the pedagogical universities students’ educational and cognitive activity; in the study of the development of motivation for learning in the context of distant form of organization of future teachers training; in the study of the peculiarities of forming motivation for learning and for the profession of a teacher as well.

Returns to different levels of education in Russia

PurposeEducation system stimulates the development of human capital and provides informative signaling allowing to differentiate productivity of individuals. If education system is efficient then higher levels of education usually associated with greater returns on labor market. To evaluate the efficiency of Russian education system we aim to estimate the effect of vocational education and different levels of higher education on wages.Design/methodology/approachWe use data on 8,764 individuals in the years 2019–2021. Our statistical approach addresses two critical issues: nonrandom selection into employment and the endogeneity of education choice. To tackle these problems, we employed Heckman’s method and its extension that is a structural model which addresses the issue of self-selection into different levels of education.FindingsThe results of the analysis suggest that there is a significant heterogeneity in the returns to different levels of education. First, higher education, in general, offers substantial wage premiums when compared to vocational education. Specifically, individuals with specialist’s and bachelor’s degrees enjoy higher wage premiums of approximately 23.59–24.04% and 16.43–16.49%, respectively, compared to those with vocational education. Furthermore, we observe a significant dis-parity in returns among the various levels of higher education. Master’s degree provides a substantial wage premium in comparison to both bachelor’s (19.79–20.96%) and specialist’s (12.64–13.41%) degrees. Moreover, specialist degree offers a 7.16–7.55% higher wage premium than bachelor’s degree.Practical implicationsWe identify a hierarchical pattern in the returns associated with different levels of higher education in Russia, specifically “bachelor-specialist-master.” These findings indicate that each level of education in Russia serves as a distinct signal in the labor market, facilitating employers' ability to differentiate between workers. From a policy perspective, our results suggest the potential benefits of offering opportunities to transition from specialist’s to master’s degrees on a tuition-free basis. Such a policy may enhance access to advanced education and potentially lead to higher returns for individuals in the labor market.Originality/valueThere are many studies on returns to higher education in Russia. However, just few of them estimate the returns to different levels of higher education. Also, these studies usually do not address the issue of the endogeneity arising because of self-selection into different levels of education. Our structural econometric model allows addressing for this issue and provides consistent estimates of returns to different levels of education under the assumption that individuals with higher propensity to education obtain higher levels of education.

Modern society is focused on the growth of various types of interpersonal interaction, including speech communication, which leads to increased requirements for the quality of appropriate training of future primary school teachers, i.e. improvement of communicative competence, which will ensure their active professional activity in the future. The need to update the content of this process is related to various aspects of primary school modernization: the transition to the implementation of the Concept of a new Ukrainian school, support for its humanization, child-centered ideas; implementation of the principles of competency-based and person-oriented approaches in the education of younger schoolchildren, etc. In the social aspect, the importance of researching the communicative competence of primary school teachers is determined by the lack of speech and especially rhetorical culture, both professional and general (culture of thinking, speech, communication). In the pedagogical aspect, its development is aimed at the formation of productive, creative thinking and is based on the ethical principles of morality, and therefore is an important component of the formation of a harmonious personality as the greatest value in a democratic society. In the pedagogical activity of a teacher, communication is professionally significant, as it accompanies all types of work, and therefore the communicative skills of students of the second (master's) level of higher education are determined by the educational and professional program «Initial Education» of the Berdyansk State Pedagogical University: «To communicate in academic Ukrainian in oral and written forms, use communicative strategies, form students' ability for mutual understanding, interpersonal interaction». As evidenced by the results of the initial survey (according to M. Schneider) to identify professional and personal needs in the formation of communicative competence of future primary school teachers, in general, they respond favorably to the methods and techniques that were used in the classes on «Fundamentals of scientific communication and academic culture». At the same time, it was noted that the greatest difficulties for the master's students were caused by exercises of a practice-oriented nature regarding the prediction of the effectiveness of one's own communicative activity and the analysis of pedagogical speech, as well as the determination of ways of its continuous improvement. Key words: communicative competence, future primary school teachers, communicative competence of primary school teachers, communicative activity of primary school teachers.

  • Scientific Journal of National Pedagogical Dragomanov University. Series 15. Scientific and pedagogical problems of physical culture (physical culture and sports)
  • T Malechko + 2 more

The purpose of the work: the influence of the New Ukrainian School on the formation of motivation for physical education lessons. Methodology: theoretical research methods were used for the purpose of researching the issues, in particular, analysis and generalization of methodological, psychological-pedagogical and educational-methodical literature, which gave an opportunity to study the features of the reform of the New Ukrainian School, its shortcomings and advantages for the educational process. We conducted a questionnaire to determine the level of motivation among student youth. Scientific novelty: the impact of the New Ukrainian School on the formation of motivation for physical education lessons is determined. Conclusions: the formation of motives for physical exercises, physical activity, and an active lifestyle is important in improving the health of students and popularizing physical culture, because it is systematic physical culture activities that contribute to the development of basic physical qualities, education of will, courage, perseverance, have a positive effect on strengthening health, increase mental capacity and social adaptation. Thus, it was found that the developed and implemented Model Curriculum "Physical Culture. 5-6 classes" for institutions of general secondary education, which really raises the level of physical education and popularizes it among students, which, in turn, increases motivation for physical education lessons in institutions of general secondary education. Thus, based on the results of the questionnaire, it can be concluded that students of education have a fairly high level of motivation in the 5th-6th grades. This indicates that modern projects such as Oleksandr Pedan's "Junior" sports movement, the President's "Active Parks" program, Ukraine Active, "Move more" and many others have brought physical education lessons to a new European level. The above-mentioned projects provide an opportunity for children during the war to engage in a variety of physical activity, which has a positive effect not only on increasing motivation for physical education lessons, but also on the level of physical fitness, improving the psychophysical state and mood of those who do it.

PROFESSIONAL INTENTIONS OF PEDAGOGICAL STUDENTS: MOTIVATION, EXPECTATIONS AND READINESS TO WORK AS TEACHERS AFTER GRADUATION
  • Jul 3, 2025
  • The Scientific Notes of the Pedagogical Department
  • Yaroslava Shvedova + 1 more

This article explores the professional intentions of pedagogical students in Ukraine, focusing on their motivation, expectations, and readiness to work as teachers after graduation. The topic’s relevance stems from the transformative processes in contemporary Ukrainian education and the crucial impact of future educators’ professional maturity on the quality of national education. The authors emphasize the need for a thorough study of these factors to improve the content and technologies of future teachers’ professional training. The article reviews scholarly works on the professional motivation and readiness of future teachers. Modern research highlights the necessity of continuous professional development, scientific and methodological activity, innovative engagement, and adaptation to changes in the educational environment, particularly the implementation of ICT. The influence of broader educational challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and military actions, as well as reforms (e.g., the New Ukrainian School – NUS), on student expectations are also examined. The conclusion is that professional intentions result from the interplay of classic pedagogical ideas and modern educational realities, demanding creativity, continuous learning, and adaptability from future teachers. To empirically study professional intentions, motivation, and readiness for pedagogical activity, an anonymous online survey was conducted among 100 pedagogical students from various Ukrainian cities, including Kharkiv, Kyiv, Dnipro, and Poltava. A quantitative survey method was used with Google Forms. The questionnaire included both closed and open-ended questions, combining structured surveying with content analysis of free responses. The survey covered sections related to motivation for choosing the profession, expectations from future activities, employment plans, factors that might hinder career realization, and self-assessment of professional readiness. The sample was formed using random sampling through online communities and social networks, ensuring broad coverage of students from different years and regions. The main motives for choosing the profession were the desire to work with children (“calling”) and job stability in education. Approximately half of the students cited these internal motives. Over 60% of respondents considered their career choice to be conscious. The most common expectations from the profession included flexible working hours and holidays, as well as the opportunity for personal growth and self-realization through teaching children. Expectations of high salaries and public respect were less pronounced. Roughly half of the students expressed a clear readiness to work in a school after graduation, with another 25–30% intending to do so temporarily. About 10–15% do not plan to work in their chosen field. Among the obstacles and drawbacks of the profession, the most frequently mentioned were low wages, high emotional burden and stress, lack of support from administration or the state, and insufficient practical training during studies. Most students rated themselves as partially ready to work as teachers (less than 25% considered themselves fully ready). Among the suggestions for increasing motivation and readiness, students highlighted: higher salaries, additional pedagogical support and mentorship, practical improvement of training (more school practice), and increased public recognition and respect for teachers. The survey revealed that future educators have significant interest in teaching, but this is coupled with an awareness of existing difficulties (financial, organizational issues) and a feeling of insufficient preparation. These findings underscore the importance of enhancing material support, improving practical training, and developing mentorship systems to retain young educators in the profession and realize their motivational potential.

Early impairments in spoken discourse abilities have been identified in Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the impact of AD on spoken discourse and the associated neuroanatomical correlates have mainly been studied in populations with higher levels of education, although preliminary evidence seems to indicate that socioeconomic status (SES) and level of education have an impact on spoken discourse. The purpose of this study was to analyze microstructural variables in spoken discourse in people with AD with low-to-middle SES and low level of education and to study their association with gray matter (GM) density. Nine women with AD and 10 matched (age, SES, and education) women without brain injury (WWBI) underwent a neuropsychological assessment, which included two spoken discourse tasks, and structural magnetic resonance imaging. Microstructural variables were extracted from the discourse samples using NILC-Metrix software. Brain density, measured by voxel-based morphometry, was compared between groups and then correlated with the differentiating microstructural variables. The AD group produced a lower diversity of verbal time moods and fewer words and sentences than WWBI but a greater diversity of pronouns, prepositions, and lexical richness. At the neural level, the AD group presented a lower GM density bilaterally in the hippocampus, the inferior temporal gyrus, and the anterior cingulate gyrus. Number of words and sentences produced were associated with GM density in the left parahippocampal gyrus, whereas the diversity of verbal moods was associated with the basal ganglia and the anterior cingulate gyrus bilaterally. The present findings are mainly consistent with previous studies conducted in groups with higher levels of SES and education, but they suggest that atrophy in the left inferior temporal gyrus could be critical in AD in populations with lower levels of SES and education. This research provides evidence on the importance of pursuing further studies including people with various SES and education levels. Spoken discourse has been shown to be affected in Alzheimer disease, but most studies have been conducted on individuals with middle-to-high SES and high educational levels. The study reports on microstructural measures of spoken discourse in groups of women in the early stage of AD and healthy women, with low-to-middle SES and lower levels of education. This study highlights the importance of taking into consideration the SES and education level in spoken discourse analysis and in investigating the neural correlates of AD. https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.24905046.
