Abstract

This Article examined the status of ‘more than 100,000 koku’ which Tsushima self-claimed under the Baku-han system. For this purpose, the subject of review is the negotiations between Edo Bakufu and the Tsushima clan in 1680 and 1709 over the number of lanterns dedicated to Shogun’s tombs.
In 1680, when Ietsuna died, Tsushima was given an order for the donation of two bronze lanterns, equivalent to ‘more than 100,000 koku’. However, Bakufu revised the instruction to dedicate one bronze lantern based on the actual kokudaka. In response, Tsushima requested to withdraw the reduction, but Bakufu ignored it.
The same problem was reignited in 1709, when Tsunayoshi died. According to the precedent of 1680, Bakufu ordered the dedication of one bronze lantern to Tsushima. Judging that this fixation of precedents could lead to damage to the family status, Tsushima prayed to persuade Bakufu through Tsuchiya Masanao, Chōsengoyō-rōjū. Masanao succeeded in persuading the senior members of Bakufu by representing that the number of lanterns = ‘more than 100,000 koku’ was directly related to the Tsushima’s ‘face’ to Joseon.
However, it is hard to say that this result was the Bakufu’s official recognition of the ‘more than 100,000 koku’ status. Furthermore, Rōjū Ōkubo Tadamasu, who was in charge of receiving lanterns, pointed out that the former dedication ceremonies had been only verbal approval by another rōjū.
Later, Bakufu instructed Tsushima to submit past cases of dedication. In the document submitted by Tsushima, two ‘Joseon-made’ bronze lanterns were written, which were donated in 1653. These were dedicated by Tsushima independently commissioned to produce it to Joseon, and it seems to be a plan to carry out the memorial service above their existing status. Through this case, it can be inferred that Tsushima reminded Bakufu that the Lantern dedication was a known issue in Joseon.
