Abstract

The article provides the understanding of the notions “potential”, “potential of rural tourism”, studies approaches to their definitions and to similar notions. The key philosophical works devoted to the notion of the potential are analysed. It is concluded that the notions “potential” and “uncertainty” are connected in modern philosophical understanding. The paper conducts the analysis of the use of the common methods of assessing the rural tourism potential. The author identifies the problems of determining the potential of rural tourism, typical of these studies, and discusses the circumstances that must be taken into consideration when assessing the potential of rural tourism development: insufficient consideration of the uncertainty factor, lack of unity of the potential assessment methodology, lack of secondary information array, ignoring the risk of rural residents’ alienation.
