Abstract
The purpose of this study is to suggest the need for a new design of the stage costume of Korean traditional performance by looking at the role of the expanded concept of stage costume shown in ‘Different Chunhyang’ by Andrei Serban. As a result of comparing and analyzing the costumes of 5 performances of Chunhyang and ’Different Chunhyang’ performed at the National Changgeuk Theater, the 5 Chunhyang performance by the korean mise-en-scène revealed limitations of confirming traditional costumes. On the other hand, the performance costumes of ‘Different Chunhyang’ by foreign mise-en-scène shows the expansion of semantic communication through costume transformation, the expansion of time & space by superposition of image and costume, the expansion of political, social and cultural symbol of costume, and the expansion of formal composition with traditional costume and contemporary costume. This suggests that the problem of modernization of traditional stage costumes can be brought up and further research is needed into the fields of dance and theatre on the theme of Chunhyang.
