Abstract

The water tower in Sholdaneshty (in the north of Moldavia) is most directly related to the construction of the railway on the Beltsy – Rybnitsa – Slobodka line, which played a transformative role in the formation of a new industrial landscape. Similar structures at railway stations were used to refuel steam locomotives with water. They were part of a single complex of roadside construction, which included both the railway station itself and the buildings of the railway depot, warehouses, workshops and other things. Being an advanced technical structure at that time, they were comprehended and designed as worthy artistic objects, in this case resembling fortress architecture. Until now, such objects in Moldavia have not been studied. Meanwhile, taking care of maintaining the old water towers in the proper architectural and artistic form solves not only the issue of preserving and studying the historical past of the region, but also the industrial landscape that was formed at the end of the 19th century.
