Abstract

This study investigates the development and the methodology of the ‘Reverse Perspective’ which is the principle of the spatial composition of the icon based on the philosophy of P. Florensky. Unlike the one‐point perspective or linear perspective which are viewed through a window and a general principle of composition of art, the icon uses a method ‘reverse perspective’. Therefore, in this study, we will conduct concrete analysis and research focusing on the 「Reverse Perspective」 and 「Iconostasis」 by Pavel Florensky. It is that the study on icon of Florensky is not only an artistic view of the icon, but also an opportunity to explore his artistic view based on the philosophy of religion. This article also helps us to understand Russiaʹs unique thinking system.BR This study focuses on three parts. First, I will summarize the research and viewpoints of the reverse perspective, which is the principle of icon. And we understand the different meaning between ‘visual world’ and ‘invisible world’ that are linked from the icon to the iconostasis. Second, we consider the concept of face, which is the form of mind. In iconostasis, we distinguish between human face and God face. This can be regarded as evidence to support the principle of space, which is an reverse perspective. Thirdly, we consider the meaning of the iconic aesthetics of Florensky is called ʹFeurgijaʹ.
