Abstract
The present study deals with the archival management of a university archive. More specifically, it concerns the recording, arrangement and description of the archive of the Law School of the University of Athens. The purpose is, through the presentation of the necessary actions, from the acquisition until the moment when the archival material is ready to become available for research, to experience the daily life and the difficulties that archivists face in Greece. At the same time, it is desired to highlight the importance of university archives, not only in higher education, but also in society as a whole. For this reason a bibliographic research was conducted, in which cases of University Archives in Greece and abroad are displayed, in order to identify the prevailing conditions, the practices that are adopted and, mainly, the problems that appear. A significant lack of research in the field of domestic university archives was observed, which was what initiated this work. It is also intended to examine whether international rules and standards of Archival Science can be effectively applied in the environment of a Greek university Archive and can be utilized by two inexperienced potential archivists to tackle the challenge of an unsorted archive. Finally, the aim is to make a comparison between Greek and foreign Archives, as well as between archival theory and reality.
