Abstract

Northern Koryakia belongs to Beringian Forest–tundra zone and East-Siberian larch forest subzone of Eurasian taiga zone. The territory is subdivided into 4 geobotanical provinces and 15 districts. Pinus pumila elfin woods occupy zonal habitats forming Beringian creeping woodland. Betula middendorffii and Alnus fruticosa thickets form a vegetation type associated with Pinus pumila open woodlands. Mutually they form a subalpine vegetation belt. The alpine vegetation belt is formed by dwarf-shrub and lichen-rich tundras. In river valleys floodplain forests (Chosenia arbutifolia, Populus suaveolens, Salix udensis, S. schwerinii) are common. Shrubby willow thickets (Salix pulchra, S. alaxensis, S. krylovii) are widespread. Coastal dwarf-shrub tundra, salt marshes, meadows, Betula ermanii groves are distributed on azonal sites. In waterlogged habitats sedge-moss mires, Sphagnum-rich bogs, hillocky and polygonal mires develop. Tussocky sedge-cottongrass (Carex lugens, Eriohorum vaginatum) tundra developing in intermountain depressions is characteristic. In the western part of the Penzhina River Basin, Larix cajanderi and Betula platyphylla forests are met.
